Urban Intelligence recently completed its third successful sound system project for The Lucas Group – the name behind some of Melbourne’s hippest restaurants.

First it was Chin Chin. Then it was Kong. This year it was Hawker Hall.

Situated in the vibrant Windsor end of Chapel Street, Hawker Hall is a food and beer hall inspired by the vibrant hawker centres of Singapore & Malaysia with a mouth-watering mix of dumplings, noodles, satay, curries and stir fries.

Key to the restaurant’s ‘cool-factor’ is its state-of the-art audio solution, designed and installed by the team at Urban Intelligence.

The Brief

The Lucas Group asked Urban Intelligence to create a flexible audio solution capable of creating a range of atmospheres at the push of button. They wanted low-level background music during relaxing meal times – as well as a thumping nightclub sound to up the ante once the DJ arrives.

Our Approach

Throughout the design process, our aim was to keep control of the various systems minimal and robust. We also wanted to create a simple and intuitive user interface that would allow easy switching between DJ and background audio modes.

Urban Intelligence Head Design Engineer, Stephen Sokolowski, engineered and designed the solution – and Senior Project Manager, Michael Shinkfield, delivered the project onsite.

The Solution

Urban Intelligence designed a highly dynamic, bass-driven audio solution, customisable to each of the venue’s five zones (bar, dining area, entry, toilets and outside laneway), with the ability for DJ decks to be played in each zone.

We installed an RTI virtual control panel and created a simple user interface for easy switching between DJ and background audio modes. The computer was also used to control background audio via Sonos and the Sonos app.

We also chose and installed the following hardware:

  • 7 x LGO9 acoustic wall mounted speakers which kept in line with the open, industrial style ceiling
  • 4 x BB03.5 acoustic technology 18” ceiling-hung subwoofers
  • K2 Powersoft amplifiers to drive the subwoofers (delivering 1000w into each subwoofer)
  • 8K4 Powersoft amplifiers for the main speakers
  • Symetrix DSP for all the routing and equalization of the audio
  • A digital Dante wallplate to give the DJ full digital audio without system interference.

Urban Intelligence arranged for Acoustic Technologies to tune and commission the system to ensure it worked perfectly in the new environment.

All control equipment is now neatly stored in a dedicated communications hub back-of-house.

The Final Word

‘We’ve worked with the Urban Intelligence to deliver sound systems in our last few restaurants and it’s been great to work with them again at Hawker Hall. We’re thrilled with the sound and how simple and easy it is to use.’
